Red Devils Blank Blackburn, 3-0
EUREKA, Ill. – Playing for the first time in 12 days, the Eureka College women’s soccer team scored three times in the first 25 minutes of Saturday’s game against Blackburn on their way to a 3-0 win at Traister Field. Senior forward Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) netted the game-winner in the eighth minute.
Huizinga’s goal, her team-high fifth of the campaign, came on an assist from senior K.T. Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.). The Red Devils (5-9-0, 2-3-0 SLIAC) struck again midway through the first half when senior midfielder Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Latham H.S.) scored her second goal of the season on a 21st minute strike to beat Blackburn goalkeeper Erika Boeckmann. Junior midfielder Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago H.S.) added more insurance moments later with a 25th minute goal.
The Eureka defense held Blackburn (3-8-0, 1-4-0 SLIAC) to just one shot on goal, helping freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Coffey (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) to her first career shutout. The Red Devils recorded a season-high 40 shots in the win, topping the previous season-best of 32 set last month at MacMurray.
Eureka will return to the pitch this Thursday with a road contest at Illinois College. Kickoff in Jacksonville, Ill. is scheduled for 1 p.m.
