Women's Soccer Clipped by Cornell, 2-1
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Eureka College senior K.T. Zapushek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) converted on a penalty kick opportunity in the first half to give the Red Devils an early lead, but Cornell scored twice later in the half to come from behind and beat EC, 2-1, in the consolation game at the Sal Vacarro Tournament hosted by North Central, Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils jumped in front after junior Megan Waggoner (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago H.S.) was fouled inside the box in the 23rd minute. Zapushek buried the ensuing penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. The advantage would be short-lived, as the Rams tied the game in the 29th minute on a goal from Kelli Ford. Jen Swotek was credited with an assist on the tying goal. The score remained tied until the final minute of the first half when Rachel Wynn gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead on a goal with just 0:30 remaining before intermission. Neither team found the back of the net in the second half.
Eureka’s Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) made 10 saves playing in her hometown and played the full 90 minutes. Cornell’s Jenn Barbo stopped three of the four shots on goal she faced.
The Red Devils return to action this Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Concordia (Ill.) before visiting Greenville on Saturday at noon to open SLIAC play.
