#7 Illinois Wesleyan Sinks Red Devils

Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Bringing an unbeaten record into Tuesday’s game at Traister Field, seventh-ranked Illinois Wesleyan delivered a steady, relentless attack to beat the Eureka College women’s soccer team, 13-1.  The Titans used 28 players in the win.

Emily Hinchman, who entered the contest as Illinois Wesleyan’s (4-0-2) leading scorer, put a shot past Eureka goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) after a steal near the top of the box for an unassisted goal 9:36 into the match.  Erin Kugler scored the game-winner moments later in the 12th minute, another unassisted strike.

With a 5-0 lead and 13 seconds remaining in the first half, IWU’s Annie O’Brien was awarded a penalty kick after getting tangled up in the box with Eureka’s Kelsey Baruzzini (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.).  O’Brien’s scoring bid was denied by an outstanding save from Williamson, keeping Eureka’s deficit at five heading into the break.

Eureka (2-3-0) got on the board in the 49th minute when senior Katie Huizinga (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South H.S.) took a pass from senior Amy Scammahorn (Decatur, Ill./Warrensburg-Lathan H.S.) and dribbled down the right side of the field, eventually sending a shot past Illinois Wesleyan keeper Haley Hergert.  The goal was Huizinga’s third of the season.  The Titans added seven more goals later in the match to set the final score at 13-1.

Williamson allowed five goals in the first half, but made a career-high 14 saves before giving way to freshman classmate Lindsay Coffey (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) for the second half.  Coffey made six saves in her 45 minutes of action.  Hergert allowed the lone Eureka goal and also recorded a save in 62 minutes of work.  Katie Sill finished the game in net for the Titans and did not see a shot on goal.

The Red Devils will return to the road for their next five games, starting with a two-match trip to Naperville this weekend to take part in the Sal Vaccaro Tournament hosted by North Central.  Eureka will play the tournament host Cardinals at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
