Box Score

EUREKA, Ill. – Westminster sophomore forward Megan Gunnels netted the match-winning goal to break a scoreless tie shortly after halftime, sparking an offensive outburst by the visiting Blue Jays in a 3-0 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Eureka College women’s soccer team, Saturday afternoon at Traister Field.

Gunnels received a pass from Courtney Luebbert and hit the back of the net from close range at 48:58 for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.  The Blue Jays (3-13-0, 3-5-0 SLIAC) stretched their lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later on another strike from inside the 6-yard box when Erin Slay scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Katy Braden at 50:52.  Luebbert added an insurance tally for the visitors at 64:21.

The Red Devils (0-16-1, 0-7-1 SLIAC) attempted 11 shots and six shots on goal for the match, both totals being Eureka’s best at Traister Field and against SLIAC competition in 2011.  Junior Katie McLaughlin (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) and freshman Jenna Brooks (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) each attempted four shots.

Eureka junior goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) made 15 saves, finishing the season with 210 stops.  That mark is the Eureka single-season school record, while her career save total of 363 is the all-time Eureka mark.

Saturday’s match against the Blue Jays marked the final collegiate match for Eureka seniors Rachel Funk (Morton, Ill./Morton), Heather Flanigan (Streator, Ill./Fieldcrest H.S.), Erika Thomas (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) and Grace Zastrow (North Freedom, Wis./Reedsburg H.S.).
