Women's Soccer Chosen Sixth By SLIAC Coaches
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A preseason poll conducted by St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference head coaches has the Eureka College women’s soccer team picked to tie for sixth place in the nine-team league in 2011, the league office announced late Tuesday night. Coaches voted in the poll during an annual preseason meeting in Elsah, Ill. earlier this month.
The Red Devils and Blackburn both received the same number of points in the poll to tie for sixth place. Reigning regular season and tournament champion Principia has been picked to win the conference after receiving five first-place votes. Greenville was chosen for second with two first-place votes, followed by Webster in third place with a pair of first-place votes. Fontbonne and Westminster were picked for fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Spalding (eighth) and MacMurray (ninth) rounded out the poll. The top four teams in the final SLIAC standings, excluding Spalding in its final year as a provisional member of NCAA Division III, will qualify for the league tournament. The semifinal round is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 2 and the championship game will be played Saturday, Nov. 5. All matches will be played at the site of the higher seed. The winner of the tournament receives the SLIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Red Devils will begin the season on the road for the third consecutive season and fourth time overall on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Franklin at 1 p.m. Eureka’s SLIAC opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 versus Fontbonne at Centene Stadium in Clayton, Mo at 6 p.m.
