May 1, 2008 EC nearly upsets 3rd seed, takes 6th in SLIAC Championship
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Eureka College won one out of three matches to finish in sixth place at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship. The Red Devils, who were seeded sixth, almost upset the No. 3 seed, Webster University, in the first round. Eureka fell in a 5-4 decision to the Gorloks, but rebounded the next day to defeat Blackburn College 8-1. In the 5th place match, Westminster College defeated EC 5-2.
Laura Fandel (Pekin, Ill./HS) won all three of her singles matches at the SLIAC Championship playing in the No. 4 position, including a (6-0, 3-6, 6-2) victory over Hannah Wojahn of Webster (8-6). Fandel also won twice in No. 1 doubles with teammate Alyssa Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS).
Eureka (4-8) took two doubles matches versus Webster and Courtney Lauss (Washington, Ill./HS) took her No. 5 singles match (6-4, 6-2). Alyssa Wetterauer played valiantly as EC sat one point away from clinching the upset, even getting within one point of winning her No. 1 singles match. However, Laila Wessel of Webster rallied for a (3-6, 7-5, 6-4) match clinching win for the Gorloks, who went on to take third place in the tournament.
Wetterauer came back to win two matches as EC won eight out of the nine played against Blackburn (2-9). She won at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-1) and at No. 1 doubles with Fandel (8-6). Ebony Thomas (Peoria, Ill./Manual) and Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS) won their No. 2 doubles match up (8-4), in addition to straight set singles victories at the second and third slots respectively. Lauss also won two matches, taking a fifth singles match (6-2, 6-1) and a third doubles match (8-1) with teammate Shenise Townsend (Peoria, Ill./Manual).
Natalie Wetterauer and Laura Fandel accounted for Eureka's two points against Westminster (10-10) in a match that featured many close scores. Wetterauer won at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-3), while Fandel's lopsided (6-1, 6-2) triumph at the No. 4 position was the exception in the match. Westminster took a pair of 8-6 decisions in doubles contests as well as a three-set match at No. 1 singles to earn the consolation bracket title.
Natalie Wetterauer led the Red Devils for the season with seven singles victories and 12 wins overall. Fandel posted the best winning percentage with an impressive 6-2 singles mark as she won her last six matches played on the year. The team of Ebony Thomas and Natalie Wetterauer finished with a 4-3 record in doubles competition. Third-year players Thomas and Townsend served as the veterans of this year's team as the squad did not have any seniors.
