Red Devils open season with impressive 9-0 sweep of Maryville

Boxscore

The Eureka women's tennis team opened the season with a clean 9-0 sweep of conference rival Maryville University Saturday.  Victories of 9-0 are always impressive in tennis, but are even more so when they come against opponents like the Saints, who had beaten Eureka 9-0 last season.

The Red Devils (1-0, 1-0 SLIAC) lost a total of just eight games in the nine matches played.  Eureka features a veteran lineup this season, but newcomer Meredith Lynch (Dunlap, Ill./HS) served up a pair of wins as well.  She won her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0, then paired with Alyssa Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS) for an 8-2 victory in the top doubles match.  Similarly, Wetterauer also posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in singles play.

The Red Devils' duo of Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS) and Laura Fandel (Pekin, Ill./HS) were the winning combination in the second doubles match to say the least, taking an 8-0 decision.  Ebony Thomas (Peoria, Ill./HS) and Courtney Lauss (Washington, Ill./HS) won the final doubles contest 8-1.

Thomas and Lauss actually improved on their impressive doubles effort in singles play as both won 6-0, 6-0.  Natalie Wetterauer earned a 6-1, 6-1 win in No. 3 singles, while Fandel coasted 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles match.

Eureka is next slated to take on Monmouth College on the road Tuesday, March 24.  The Red Devils' next home match will be the next day, Wednesday, March 25 at 4:00 pm versus Greenville College.
