Riffle wins 1st career match; Lynch, Fandel now 3-0 in singles

Boxscore

Two Red Devils improved to 3-0 in singles play for the season Thursday as Eureka College fell in non-conference women's tennis competition at Monmouth College 6-3.

Meredith Lynch (Dunlap, Ill./HS) and Laura Fandel (Pekin, Ill./HS) each posted straight sets victories to remain undefeated.  The duo have been so dominant, they have lost just four games apiece through three matches thus far.  Lynch recorded a 6-1, 6-2 decision over the Fighting Scots' Cassie Frantz, who was 7-5 last fall playing in the No. 1 singles slot for Monmouth.  Fandel was even better, blanking Julie Battcher 6-0, 6-0 in No. 5 singles.

Eureka (2-1) earned a split in singles play as Riana Riffle (Washington, Ill./HS) was a winner in her debut over Rachel Bogner 6-1, 6-3.

The Red Devils nearly took enough singles matches to earn the victory, but Monmouth survived close decisions at Nos. 3 and 4.  Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS) and Ebony Thomas (Peoria, Ill./HS) were both denied wins after battling deep into a third set super tie-breaker.  Wetterauer came back from losing the opening set 6-0 to take set two 6-4.  Thomas won the opening set 6-3 before falling in the second set 6-2.  Both Red Devils were then defeated by 12-10 tie-breakers.

Monmouth swept the doubles matches, with the closest match coming at No. 2 between Kimi Wegner and Amy Unzicker of Monmouth and the EC duo of Wetterauer and Fandel.  The Scots tandem won 8-6.

Eureka will next play a SLIAC double match hosted by Webster University Saturday, April 4.  EC will take on Westminster College at 1:00 pm, then square off with the homestanding Gorloks at 4:00 pm.
