Eureka College junior Laura Fandel (Pekin, Ill./HS) has been chosen as the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 23-29. This marks the first ever SLIAC Player of the Week Award for Eureka in the sport of women's tennis.
Fandel helped the Red Devils (2-1, 2-0 SLIAC) to a 5-4 win March 25 over Greenville College, the second place team in the SLIAC from last season. She defeated Anna Wagner of Greenville in her No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-1 and paired with Natalie Wetterauer for an 8-3 No. 2 doubles victory over Jessie Harling and Megan Troupe. The next day versus Monmouth College, Fandel improved to 3-0 in singles play on the season, blanking Julie Battcher 6-0, 6-0.
Fandel has won her last nine singles matches dating back to last season, and has a 9-2 career record at Eureka. She has also been a part of five doubles victories, including two this year. This season in singles, she has won all six sets she has played, dropping a total of just four games.
Eureka will next take on conference rivals Westminster College and Webster University Saturday, April 4 in a pair of matches hosted by Webster starting at 1:00 pm.
