Meredith Lynch honored by SLIAC as Athlete of the week

The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has named Meredith Lynch (Dunlap, Ill./HS) of Eureka College as its Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 30 - April 5.  Laura Fandel received the award last week giving the Red Devils women's tennis team back-to-back winners of the weekly honor.

Lynch, who admits to not having played competitive tennis for a number of years, has burst on to the scene this spring in helping the Red Devils (3-2, 3-1 SLIAC) to their best start in over 10 seasons.  Eureka moved to 3-0 in SLIAC action after topping Westminster College for the first time in four tries, 8-1 Saturday.  EC nearly pulled off a second win on the day, but fell to Webster University 5-4.

In her first year at Eureka after transferring from Illinois Central College, Lynch improved to 5-0 in No. 1 singles play and 4-1 in No. 1 doubles matches after posting a 2-0 mark in both departments last week.  She easily defeated Abby Stuck of Westminster 6-0, 6-0, then netted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alexandra Meyer of Webster in a battle of undefeated players versus conference opponents.

Pairing up with teammate Alyssa Wetterauer, Lynch won doubles matches over Westminster (8-2) and Webster (8-4).  Eureka's No. 1 doubles team is now 4-0 in SLIAC play.

Despite the decisive scores with which Lynch won against Meyer, that match marked her closest decision thus far in singles.  She has won all five matches in straight sets, dropping only eight games in the process.  Only twice has she lost more than one game in a set.
