EC sweeps 2 from Griffins, takes 5-match win streak, #2 seed into Tournament
Eureka College swept a women's tennis doubleheader from Fontbonne University Saturday by 9-0 and 6-3 finals. The first match counted as a SLIAC contest, giving the Red Devils a final regular season conference mark of 6-1. Eureka still has a chance to earn a share of the regular season title, should fourth place Principia knock off first place Webter on Tuesday. Eureka is 8-2 overall.
In the first match of the day, Eureka swept the three doubles points and dominated singles play, dropping a total of three games to the Griffins. Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS) was one of three Red Devils to win 6-0, 6-0, doing so at No. 4 singles for her fourth consecutive singles victory. Alyssa Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./HS) matched her sister with her fourth straight singles win, taking a 6-0, 6-1 decision at third singles.
Meredith Lynch (Dunlap, Ill./HS) and Laura Fandel (Pekin, Ill./HS) each improved to 9-0 in singles matches on the season as both won 6-0, 6-0. Lynch ran past Sara Hermann in No. 1 singles and Fandel bested Megan Schmittel in No. 5 singles. Ebony Thomas (Peoria, Ill./HS) made it a clean sweep, taking her No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Libby Brauss.
In the second match, Riana Riffle (Washington, Ill./HS) accounted for two wins to lead the Red Devils to their fifth consecutive victory. The Eureka duo of Riffle and Rachel Funk (Morton, Ill./HS) posted a 8-4 in No. 1 doubles play. Both players had recorded doubles wins in match one as well. Riffle won at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4 over Hermann.
Megan Adkins (Mazon, Ill./Seneca), who teamed up with Funk to win 8-1 in No. 2 doubles in the first match, won in singles play in the nightcap, defeating Monica Ellebracht 6-3, 6-2. Eureka picked up a third singles win, and fourth point by a first-year player, from Tonya Davis (Metamora, Ill./HS) as she netted an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
The Red Devils will next compete in the SLIAC Tennis Championships starting Friday, April 24. Eureka will be the No. 2 seed and match up with seventh seeded Maryville University in the quarterfinal round. EC opened the season at home against the Saints, blanking them 9-0. Should the Red Devils be able to repeat that performance, they will meet the winner of No. 3 Westminster and No. 6 Blackburn in the semi-finals. The times for the matches have not been set as of yet. Eureka's first round match will be held at Principia Upper School in St. Louis.
