Laura Fandel Named Academic All-American
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior women’s tennis player Laura Fandel (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S./Illinois Central) has been named a Second Team Division III At-Large Academic All-American for the 2008-09 season by ESPN The Magazine, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced. Fandel is the first Eureka College student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors from the organization.
As a junior last season, Fandel posted a perfect 12-0 singles record playing primarily from the No. 5 spot in the Red Devil lineup. She helped Eureka to a 10-3 overall record, including a 6-1 mark in the SLIAC and a third place finish at the SLIAC Tournament last April. Fandel added seven doubles wins with partner Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) during dual play. She was named First Team All-SLIAC at the No. 5 singles position.
An English major with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average, Fandel was one of only 14 Division III student-athletes that received the honor to have a perfect GPA. She was the only player from the SLIAC named First Team Academic All-District 5 last May, making her eligible for All-America recognition.
“Laura has been such a key part of our program both on the court and in the classroom,” EC head coach Abby Hearn said. “This is a tremendous honor for her and we’re all very proud and excited for what lies ahead during her senior year.”
To be eligible for Academic All-America status, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in athletic standing and be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average at his or her current institution.
