Wetterauer, Lynch Claim SLIAC Doubles Crown

Final Results

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Eureka College women’s tennis doubles pairing of senior Alyssa Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) and junior Meredith Lynch (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap H.S.) won back-to-back matches on Saturday at the Dwight David Tennis Center to win the top doubles flight of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Individual Championships in St. Louis, Mo.  The victory earned All-SLIAC First Team honors for both players, while Lynch also earned All-SLIAC Honorable Mention as a singles competitor.

The top seed in No. 1 doubles flight, Wetterauer and Lynch blanked Westminster’s pairing of Dori Craighead and Megan Slayton, 8-0, to advance to the finals.  The Eureka duo won the title with a 9-7 win over Sarah Corbitt and Marianna Hronek of Principia.  The victory avenged an 8-5 defeat suffered on April 6 to the same Principia pairing.

Lynch turned in one of Eureka’s best singles performances with a second place finish in the top flight.  She didn’t drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 quarterfinal rout of Blackburn’s Bethany Flores.  Lynch also won her semifinal match against Webster’s Alexandra Meyer, 6-1, 6-2, before falling in the championship match to SLIAC Player of the Year Corbitt, 6-3, 6-2.

Eureka junior Natalie Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) also recorded a runner-up finish, placing second in the No. 3 singles flight.  She topped Amanda Orzechoski of Blackburn in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-3, followed by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win in the semifinals over Principia’s Heather Libbe.  Wetterauer dropped the championship match to Alison Tungate of Webster, 6-2, 6-4.

Eureka senior Alyssa Wetterauer (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.) won her quarterfinal match in the No. 2 singles flight, defeating Maggie Sheraden of Blackburn, 6-1, 6-3.  Wetterauer dropped her semifinal match before claiming third place with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Principia’s Marianna Hronek.

Senior Megan Adkins (Mazon, Ill./Seneca H.S.) and sophomores Rachel Funk (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) and Riana Riffle (Washington, Ill./Morton H.S.) each opened their respective flights with losses on Friday before bouncing back to claim fifth place finishes with victories on Saturday.  Funk played at No. 4 singles, followed by Adkins at No. 5 and Riffle at No. 6.

In other doubles play, Natalie Wetterauer and Riffle recorded a 9-8 quarterfinal victory in the No. 2 doubles flight on Friday over Principia’s Heather Libba and Jasmine Carcieri The Eureka pairing dropped consecutive matches on Saturday for a fourth place finish.

At No. 3 doubles, Adkins and Funk stumbled in their quarterfinal match on Friday, but recovered to win fifth place with an 8-1 win over Mary Gould and Megan Schmittel of Fontbonne.
