Volleyball Falls Twice on Opening Day in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Eureka College volleyball team began the 2012 season Saturday as part of the Labor Day Classic hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The Red Devils dropped their opener to Cornell, 25-8, 25-9, 25-16, and later fell to #2 Washington, 25-6, 25-5, 25-14.
Senior libero Courtney Kincaid (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) finished Saturday’s opener against the Rams with 20 digs. In the afternoon contest against the tournament host Bears, Kincaid and newcomer Sam Vogel (Benson, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.) each had seven digs, while senior outside hitter Kelli Dunne (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S./Illinois Central) chipped in with five kills. Washington entered its own tournament Saturday ranked second nationally according to the preseason AVCA Division III poll.
The Red Devils will continue action Sunday at the Labor Day Classic with two more non-conference matches. Eureka will square off against Dominican (Ill.) at 10 a.m., follwed by a 12:15 p.m. tilt with DePauw.
