Eureka shows opening game grit despite loss to Scots

The Red Devils continued their mastery of the opening game Tuesday night, winning by the score of 32-30. But, Monmouth College stormed back to take the next three stanzas (30-22, 30-17, 30-16) and the in non-conference volleyball action at Eureka.

The match began as if it would turn out to be one of the greatest all-time epic struggles in EC volleyball history. Game one featured 13 ties, with neither side gaining more than a four point cushion. EC (3-5) took its first lead since being ahead 13-12 following a Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) ace that turned the count to 30-29 in Eureka's favor. The ensuing point provided a wild back-and-forth exchange that finally ended in Red Devil error. Monmouth (6-2) gave the lead right back, however, by serving the next ball into the net. On the next point, a dig by Cara Willey (Lexington, Ill./Gridley) was turned into a game-winning Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) kill giving EC the game 32-30.

The visiting Fighting Scots, who led 78-67 in digs on the night, tuned up their defensive play to turn a memorable game one victory for EC into a forgettable night at the office. The Red Devils trailed nearly the entire rest of the match, but rallied late in game two to get within 23-21. Soon thereafter, a frustrating trend for the home faithful began as Monmouth was able to even the match at one by scoring seven of the next eight points.

Monmouth jumped out quickly in the third game 6-1 and never looked back thanks to a match-high attack percentage of .241. The Scots hit at a .209 clip for the match compared to Eureka's .066.

The Red Devils seemed to regain solid footing in game four as they dashed out to a 8-5 lead. But Monmouth saved its best serving game for last by recording nine of 17 aces in the clinching game. The Scots went on a 13-2 run to take an 18-10 lead and coasted to a 30-16 victory.

"We came out fired up to win," said Eureka Coach Molly Logan. "Unfortunately, we dwindled quickly and were never able to recover."

Faith led Eureka with 15 digs and four aces. Willey, who logged increased time on offense due to injuries, continued her superb defensive play with 14 digs and chipped in three timely kills in game one. Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) led EC with 11 kills, while Wilson just missed a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills. Samantha Poterek (Lee, Ill./Indian Creek) had six kills and has now gone two full matches without an attack error. EC has won the first game in six out of eight matches.

Amanda Boonstra led a balanced Monmouth effort with 14 kills and 16 digs.

Eureka will next be in action Thursday, Sept. 14 at Webster University for a non-conference tilt starting at 7:00 pm in St. Louis.
