Saints outlast Red Devils in five set marathon
A familiar script played out at the Reagan Center Tuesday night as the Red Devils took the first game, but were unable to hold on as the visiting Maryville University Saints took home a five set non-conference volleyball win (23-30, 30-26, 19-30, 30-21, 15-12).
Maryville opened the match by jumping out to a 7-2 lead only to see Eureka College roar back to tie the score at 12. Soon after, blocks by Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) and Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) gave the Red Devils their first taste of the lead at 14-13. That was just the third of eight consecutive points scored by EC. Davis tallied seven kills on just eight attacks for a percentage of .875 and Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) added three service aces allowing Eureka to take game one 30-23.
The Red Devils were off their game in the second stanza, hitting into 13 errors. Despite leading by as many as six points and Maryville's attack percentage slumping from .304 in game one to .043 in game two, EC could not take advantage with a percentage of (-.017). The Saints took their first lead at 17-16 during a decisive 9-0 run. The Red Devils crept back within two at 27-25, but two more errors doomed the rally and Maryville won 30-26.
The Red Devils turned things around by drastic proportions in the third game. EC had 11 fewer attack errors than the previous game and recorded half of their 14 aces on the night. Eureka sprinted out to a 10-3 lead and did not let the Saints within five the rest of the game, cruising to a 30-19 win.
Maryville never trailed in game four to set up a winner take all fifth frame. The Saint played superb defense, collecting a 20-13 advantage in digs in addition of using six of their nine aces in the match for a 30-21 triumph.
Maggie Hoette, who led all played with 24 kills and 26 digs on the night, continued to be a thorn in the Red Devils' sides in the decisive game. Neither squad enjoyed a lead of more than two points until Hoette's game-closing spike gave the Saints a 15-12 win. The game was tied five times, with the last being 9-9. Davis brought EC back to within one point on two occasions late in the game, but to no avail. She led Eureka with 18 kills and a .268 attack percentage.
Wilson carded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 15 digs. Eureka was led in digs by Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais), who had 19. Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) registered her eighth double figure kill game with 14. Matson dished out a game-high 44 assists.
Eureka hosts the Red Devil Triangular Saturday, Sept. 23. The Red Devils will battle MacMurray College at 11:00 am and St. Louis College of Pharmacy at 3:00 pm. in non-conference play. The Highlanders and Euts are slated to square off at 1:00 pm.
