Red Devils dig deep (into attic) in win over Blackburn
The all-maroon uniforms may have smelled and looked strange, but Eureka College (6-7, 1-0 SLIAC) began SLIAC conference play in style Wednesday with a 3-1 (30-21, 30-19, 26-30, 30-27) triumph over Blackburn University (4-4, 0-1 SLIAC) on "Retro Night".
Head coach Molly Logan may have been questioning the decision to wear the throwback uniforms that EC volleyball team wore when Logan played for Eureka in the 1990s when her squad fell behind 6-0 to start the contest. But after a timeout, the Red Devils stormed back to take a 10-7 lead by winning 10 of the next 11 points. Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) and Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) did not let Blackburn gain back any momentum with six kills each as EC took game one 30-21.
Freshman Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./HS) got Eureka off to a great start in game two by serving for three aces and eight consecutive points allowing the Red Devils to sprint out to a 9-0 advantage. Blackburn was unable to get any closer than six points for the remainder of the game. Junior Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) had six kills and Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) registered 14 assists for the Red Devils, who led by as many as 12 before settling for a 30-19 win.
The Beavers posted their best hitting game (.206), while the Red Devils were having their worst (.000) and Blackburn was able to extend the match with a 30-26 game three victory. Eureka led 19-16, but a pair of Blackburn blocks followed by three EC errors resulted in a 6-0 Beavers rally and EC was not able to recover.
Eureka raced out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth game, but Laura Reeter, who had seven kills and seven digs for Blackburn in the previous game, kelt the Beavers close with eight more kills and seven digs. The Red Devils, who did not trail in the final game, watched their seven point lead slowly melt away until Blackburn tied the game for the first time at 24. With the count again tied at 25, Wilson recorded two kills as EC won the next three points. Then Davis slammed down two more, including the clincher, as Eureka pulled out a 30-27 decision.
Davis and Wilson led Eureka with 17 and 16 kills respectively. Myers added 11. The Red Devils led in aces 12-4 paced by five from Willman. Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) led the defensive effort with 22 digs, while Matson finished with 48 assists.
Reeter led all players with 19 kills and led five Beavers in double figure digs with 17.
Eureka will play two matches at Lincoln Christian College on Saturday. The Red Devils take on the host team at 10 am before battling Westminster College at 12 pm. Only the match versus Westminster will count in the conference standings.
