Logan wins 100th, EC takes two at Lincoln
Eureka coach Molly Logan picked up her 100th career win and the Red Devil volleyball team moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season Saturday with a pair of victories at the Lincoln Christian Triangular. Eureka defeated both the host team 3-1 (30-18, 30-18, 25-30, 30-28) and Westminster College 3-0 (30-25, 30-16, 30-17). Logan is the second volleyball coach to reach 100 wins in school history.
She reached the milestone in game one on the day as her squad thwarted Lincoln Christian's (12-4)attempt to come back from down two games to none. Eureka (8-7, 2-0 SLIAC) won the first two games with relative ease, 30-18. After the Angels forced a game four, EC prevailed in a nail-biting 30-28 decision. Junior middle hitter Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) and Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) paced the Red Devils offensively with 15 and 14 kills respectively.
Eureka hit for a .243 percentage for the match, including marks of .333 and .324 in games two and three. The Red Devils matched their season high with 10 blocks. Junior Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) led the way in that department with foul send-backs. Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) had 44 assists, while Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Cara Willey (Lexington, Ill./Gridley) each had 16 digs.
EC moved to 2-0 in conference play with a strong serving match versus the Westminster Blue Jays (2-9, 0-2 SLIAC). Eureka racked up 13 aces in the three game sweep as Willey became the fourth different Red Devil player to record five aces in a match this season. She also led the team with seven digs. The Red Devils hit at a .365 clip for the match led by the 12 kills and .550 percentage of Myers. The Maroon and Gold defense was in fine form, limiting the Blue Jays to a (-048) hitting percentage.
Eureka has won five in a row, matching the longest winning streak from last season. EC has not won more than five consecutive matches since winning nine in a row in the 2000 season.
The Red Devils next game will be Tuesday, Oct. 3 against Principia College in Elsah, Ill. at 7:00 pm. The Panthers, who have lost just one match all season, lead the conference with a 3-0 record.
