Balance by Titans too much for mighty Kaci, Red Devils

The Red Devils' comeback attempts fell short in each game Thursday night as Illinois Wesleyan University (13-5) defeated Eureka College 3-0 (30-23, 30-15, 30-15) in a non-conference volleyball match at Eureka.

The Titans displayed crisp passing and strong hitting in the early going, leaping out to a 16-5 lead in game one. The Red Devils (8-9) were not about to give up, however, as Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) and Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) combined for 10 kills in the game as EC roared back behind the partisan crowd to within 21-17 following back-to-back aces by Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS). But it was not to be for the Maroon and Gold on this night. Strong IWU defensive play and a few untimely EC errors swung the tide back in the Titans' direction for a 30-23 decision.

The Red Devils had a much better start in the second game as they gained a 5-2 cushion only to see Illinois Wesleyan capture nine of the next ten points to go ahead 11-6. Eureka held the Titans to their lowest attack percentage of the match (.256) in game two and received three blocks from Davis and two from Wilson. Still, IWU prevailed 30-15.

Eureka again started well in the third game, scoring the first three points on Emily Forbes' (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) serve and gaining a 5-2 edge. The Titans rallied to take the lead, but the game remained close until it was 11-9. That is when the going really got tough for EC. The Titans showed why they have only played five matches lasting longer than three games this season as they tallied the next six points and eventually ended the match on a 19-6 run. Forbes helped keep the IWU hitters at bay with seven digs in the game, but the Titans found other ways to score. They recorded five aces and four blocks.

Davis led all players in the match with 10 kills for a sparkling (.429) hitting percentage. Myers and Wilson, who also had 10 digs, chipped in seven kills each. Forbes lifted 13 digs to pace the Red Devils' defense. Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) had 23 assists.

Illinois Wesleyan featured a very balanced attack with seven players having between four and nine kills. Jaclyn Verticchio led the Titans to a 56-44 edge in digs with 18 of her own.

The Red Devils have reached the midpoint of their most difficult four match stretch of the season. Having already played (15-1) Principia and now (13-5) Illinois Wesleyan, EC next hosts SLIAC preseason favorite Webster University (9-5, 2-0 SLIAC) Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 pm. The Red Devils then play another key conference match the next night at Fontbonne University (7-9, 1-1 SLIAC).
