Forbes (13 digs), Red Devils fall in league play to Webster
Outstanding defensive play by the visiting Webster University Gorloks (12-6, 4-0 SLIAC) took Eureka College (8-10, 2-2 SLIAC) out if its game Thursday night as the Red Devils fell in three games (30-14, 30-20, 30-11) in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball action.
Despite playing from behind for most of the night, credit the Eureka defense for making the Gorloks, who were picked as favorites to win the conference in the preseason, earn the points they won. This can be seen by the relatively high number of attempts per game for both teams in the match. Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) saved numerous powerful hits just before they hit the floor and led EC with 13 digs on the night. Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) added eight digs, while Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) added seven.
In game one, Eureka's Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) led all players with four kills, but Webster had five players with three and won the game 30-14. EC had an early lead of 6-5, but the Gorloks came back with the next seven points to go up 12-6. The Red Devils won the next two points, but got no closer the rest of the way.
After allowing Webster to hit .350 in game one, Eureka came back strong in the second stanza, holding the opposition to a .194 clip. Webster jumped ahead 8-4, but Myers recorded back-to-back kills capping a 4-0 push that tied the score at eight. Eureka continued to fight hard and tied the game again at 13 only to see Webster take nine of the next ten points for a 22-14 advantage en route to a 30-20 win. Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) assisted on 11 of Eureka's 12 kills in the game.
Webster was not credited with a block in the first tow games, but tallied four in the clincher, while hitting a match-high .419 in winning the third game 30-11. Only making matters worse for EC were their four service errors. Webster excelled behind the service line, enjoying a 7-1 edge in aces on the night.
Davis and Myers paced Eureka with seven kills each. Wilson slammed down six kills and Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) chipped in five. Matson finished with 25 assists.
It will be imperative for the Red Devils to quickly brush aside this tough defeat as they have yet another difficult conference foe to contend with in Fontbonne University scheduled for Friday, October 13 at 7:00 pm in St. Louis. With the loss, Eureka is now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings. Fontbonne, who topped the EC in four games on September 7 in Eureka, went into their Thursday night match with Maryville tied for sixth place at 1-2.
