Finding her mojo: Myers' 21 kills help EC soar past Eagles
Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) hammered down 21 kills in just three games to lead the Red Devils to a decisive 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-20) non-conference triumph over Robert Morris College-Springfield Monday evening in Eureka. The Red Devils are back to the .500 mark (10-10) for the third time this season, while the Eagles drop to 2-13.
Myers recorded eight kills in the opening frame and Eureka held the Eagles to (-.040) hitting. EC jumped in front 8-2 and Robert Morris never got any closer than five points the rest of the way. Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS), who set up 29 assists in the first two games, was at serve during a 7-0 run that put the Red Devils ahead 26-13. They would go on to win game one 30-18.
EC enjoyed another great start in game two to the tune of a 15-7 advantage. Five different players tallied an ace for Eureka, while Myers again led EC in kills with five. Sarah Reeter had three consecutive aces late in the game for the Eagles, but the Red Devils were not about to let their 15-point lead slip away as they held on to win 30-20.
Eureka saved its best hitting for game three. Myers finished off her bookend eight kill games, but Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) and Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) added four each and Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) had three. EC hit .415 for the game and .307 for the match compared to .060 for Robert Morris. The Eagles stayed close early, but a 13-3 Red Devils run opened the game up to 25-12 in their favor.
Eureka never trailed at any point in the match, setting a season high for a three-game match with 51 kills. For Myers, it was her second match this season with over 20 kills. Faith was the only other player in the match in double figures with 10. Junior Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais), who set a career match-high and went over 1,500 digs for her career with 37 in her last match versus Fontbonne, led all players with 13 digs. Wilson just missed a double-double, recording nine kills and nine digs. Seven different players registered an ace for Eureka.
Ashton Swearingen led the Eagles with eight kills. Robert Morris held a 4-1 edge in blocks.
The Red Devils will look to win their third straight as they play their penultimate home match Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 pm versus Greenville College. The Panthers currently sit one half game ahead of EC in third place in the conference standings.
