EC topped by Saints in 5 games for 2nd time

The Red Devils volleyball squad lost in five games to the Maryville University Saints (10-14, 4-3 SLIAC) for the second time this season Tuesday night in St. Louis by scores of (27-30, 30-21, 30-22, 29-31, 15-9). The loss drops Eureka (10-12, 3-4 SLIAC) into a tie for sixth place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference standings with two league matches remaining.

The Red Devils out-hit the Saints in game one .189 to .143, winning 30-27. Junior outside hitter Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) led EC with five kills in the opening frame en route to 11 for the match. Game one continues to be the Red Devils' bast game as they have won 14 of 22 opening games this season.

Maryville came back in games two and three, but EC forced a game five by posting the highest hitting percentage by either side with a .375 mark in game four. Both teams struggled offensively in game five, but the Saints, who won a fifth game 15-12 on September 19 in Eureka, pulled through late to clinch the match.

Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) led Eureka with 13 kills on the night, including five in game four alone. Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) recorded 24 assists.

Crystal Rosner led Maryville with 20 kills and 15 digs, while Maggie Hoette registered six of the Saints' 14 aces.

The Red Devils now have the uneasy feeling of not controlling their own destiny in terms of finishing in the top four in the conference and qualifying for the SLIAC Tournament. In addition to winning their two remaining conference matches next week, they will likely need Blackburn College (8-10, 3-4 SLIAC) to upset Maryville on Friday.

EC will next participate in the Prairie Fire Invitational at Knox College on Saturday, October 28. Eureka is slated to play Principia College at 10:00 am, Milwaukee School of Engineering at Noon and Knox
at 2:00 pm.
