Red Devils begin season 1-3 at Ripon Tournament
The Red Devils volleyball team began its season by winning one out of fourmatches at the very competitive Ripon Tournament last weekend. Eureka lost in four games to Beloit College (30-28, 23-30, 26-30, 21-30) and Lakeland College (25-30, 26-30, 30-24, 16-30) on the first day of the event. The Red Devils got their first win over former conference rival Rockford College in a five set match (30-23, 30-25, 28-30, 29-31, 15-8), but fell in their final contest in four games to Ripon College (24-30, 30-24, 15-30, 26-30).
Junior Charissa Wilson (Princeville, Ill./HS) posted the first of her four straight double digit kill and dig matches with 14 kills and 10 digs versus Beloit. She had five kills in Eureka's two point win in game one, but the Bucs, who went on to a 3-1 record at the tournament, rallied to take the next three games. Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) had 15 digs.
Three Red Devils reached double figures in kills against Lakeland. Wilson led the way with 13 followed by Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) with 11 and Kaci Davis (Fairbury, Ill./Prairie Central) with 10. EC was able to take game three from the eventual tournament champions, but 12 service errors proved to be the Maroon and Gold's undoing.
Eureka outlasted Rockford in five games to earn its first win of the season. EC nearly knocked out the Regents early, but lost games three and four by two points each. Krysta Matson (Metamora, Ill./HS) dished out 69 assists, a Eureka single-match record since rally scoring was instituted in 2001. Myers (22 kills), Davis (20) and Wilson (19) were again her most frequent targets. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) notched her first double-double with 12 kills and 21 digs. She was one of three Red Devils with over 20 digs, joining Wilson (25) and Cara Willey (Lexington, Ill./Gridley, 24 digs).
The tournament hosts topped EC in the final match on the strength of 14 aces. Myers was a perfect 6-for-6 in attacks in Eureka's 30-24 game two victory. She finished with a match-high 15 kills. Other team leaders included Matson with 46 assists and Forbes with 21 digs.
The Red Devils visit Knox today, Sept. 5 at 7:00 pm. EC went 2-0 versus the Prairie Fire last year. Eureka's home opener is slated for Thursday, Sept. 7 at 7:00 pm versus Fontbonne University.
