Eureka battles to 1-3 record against top 4 teams at invite
The Eureka volleyball team posted a 1-3 record at the Engineer Invitational hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, playing four matches in less than a 24-hour time span.
The Red Devils (4-5) received a tough draw as they played the four top squads in terms of records in the eight team event. Eureka squared off with the eventual undefeated champion, Millikin University, in the first match Friday, dropping a 3-0 decision (30-19, 30-22, 30-24). The Red Devils then played three straight opponents that ended with a 3-1 mark. Eureka was the only team to top Lewis & Clark College, doing so in five games (31-29, 19-30, 9-30, 30-24, 17-15) on Friday. EC fell twice on Saturday to Earlham College in five games (29-31, 30-28, 30-19, 23-30, 15-12) and Rose-Hulman in four (30-23, 25-30, 30-22, 30-19).
Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS), who led the Red Devils in kills in all four matches of the event, was named to the nine-member All-Tournament Team. Her totals included a team-leading 71 kills, 4.2 kills per game and a .329 hitting percentage.
Several other Red Devils also had strong performances. Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) was second on the team, hitting at a .259 clip, in addition to having the most blocks with seven. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) ranked second in both kills (49) and blocks (6). She was one of the keys to Eureka's victory over Lewis & Clark, registering 16 kills and eight digs.
Defensively, senior Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) led the charge with double digit digs in each match. She had a high of 28 against Lewis & Clark. Beth Applen (Chillicothe, Ill./IVC) had half of her 38 digs for the tournament in Eureka's win.
Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) averaged 9.3 assists per game for a total of 158 over the four matches. She chipped in 11 kills against only a single hitting error.
The Red Devils open the home and conference portion of their schedule later today (Sept. 11) versus Blackburn College. The match is slated for 7:00 pm.
