Myers' dominates 3-game victory with career-high 25 kills
Superb back row defense and a dominant performance by Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) led Eureka College to a 3-0 (32-30, 30-16, 30-24) victory in the first home match of the season over Blackburn College Tuesday night. The contest also marked the beginning of St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as the Red Devils improved to 5-5, 1-0 SLIAC. Blackburn slid to 1-8, 0-1 SLIAC.
After having been named to the All-Tournament Team at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Invitational over the weekend, Myers was nearly unstoppable. Despite the match lasting only three games, the sophomore still registered a career-high with 25 kills. She did so on 45 attempts with only two errors for a lofty .511 percentage. It is her third 20+ kill effort in the last four matches, which is one more than she in for all of 2006 while leading the team in kills for the season.
Myers totaled 10 kills in the opening game, but the Red Devils needed to rally from well behind as Blackburn raced out to a 9-3 lead. The Beavers later used a 7-2 run to take their largest lead at 18-8. Eureka quickly closed in, however, by scoring eight of the next nine points.
Facing a 26-21 deficit, it still looked bleak for EC late in the frame, but the Red Devils took the next six points with Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) serving to take their first lead of the game at 27-26. Eureka later failed on two game points before Myers wrote a fitting conclusion with a kill.
The final two games lacked comparable drama, which did not seem to bother the partisan crowd. Eureka mounted a 9-2 run to take control of game two 19-8 before notching a 30-16 win. The Red Devils limited Blackburn to a (-.121) hitting percentage, while hitting .207 themselves.
Eureka hit even better in the third game (.268) and held off a comeback attempt for a 30-24 win.
Eureka's Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) led all players with 16 digs. Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) added 10. Bahorik dished out 27 assists to lead all players in that department.
Blackburn was led by Meghan Polston's 13 kills and Emily Johnston's 13 digs.
Eureka will be on the road for the next six matches starting with a non-conference tilt at Monmouth, Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 pm.
