Red Devils close rugged road with pair of SLIAC losses
Eureka closed a stretch of 15 out of 16 matches away from home to begin the season Saturday, losing both ends of a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tri-match with Principia 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-22) and Fontbonne 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-25).
Eureka coach Sandi Kelley was pleased with her team's attitude and effort, but lamented the fact that her squad continues to fall behind early in games before fighting to get back into contention. In particular, in the second game versus Fontbonne (6-6, 4-2 SLIAC), Eureka trailed 18-2 out of the gates only to rally back to finish behind 30-21.
Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) had a season high 11 kills on 30 attempts versus Fontbonne to lead all players in the match. She killed 15 points on the day, which ranked second on the team behind Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS), who recorded 18 kills and 28 digs in the two matches. Sam Poterek (Lee, Ill./Indian Creek) hit at a .364 clip against Principia (8-5, 5-1 SLIAC) with six kills on 11 swings and had a hand in five blocks in the contest versus Fontbonne.
Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) recorded three service aces in both matches, while adding 57 assists and 15 digs. Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais), who moved over the 1,800 career dig mark on the day, was in double figures in digs in both matches.
The Red Devils (5-11, 1-5 SLIAC) will play their first home match in 16 days Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 pm against conference foe Lincoln Christian College.
