Angels torture Red Devils in 3 game match
The venue changed, but the Red Devils' luck did not Thursday night as Eureka College returned home after six matches on the road only to fall in three games to the Lincoln Christian College Angels (30-22, 30-22, 30-26).
Lincoln Christian (6-9, 2-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) took advantage of the Red Devils' slow start, holding EC to nine kills and 13 errors (-.108) in the opening stanza. The Red Devils (5-12, 1-6 SLIAC) trailed 14-4 before they could get their feet under themselves. Eureka had an 11-4 run late in the game to get within six, but lost the final two points to drop a 30-22 decision.
The second game was the same size, but a different shape. Lincoln Christian again won 30-22, but only after rallying from behind with 12 consecutive points. The Red Devils led 9-5 early, but needed to score seven of the final nine points just to make it back to where they after game one.
In game three, the play of Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian), who recorded four kills, nine assists and two digs, gave Eureka a chance to extend the match. Kaurie Lindenmeyer's (Arcola, Ill./HS) three kills and four digs and Emily Forbes' (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) 10 digs also heavily aided the Eureka cause. But, the Angels were able to break open a 19-19 tie with a 9-3 run that sealed the Red Devils' fate.
Bahorik was the most efficient Red Devil offensively on the night, with six kills on 13 swings. She also added 27 assists, eight digs and three aces. Forbes finished with a game-high 19 digs. Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./HS) and Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) tied for the team lead with eight kills.
Adrianne Tschantz led all players with 12 kills for Lincoln Christian. Both squads' hitting percentage increased in each game. The Angels hit .244 on the night, while Eureka was at .073. The Red Devils have a tri-match scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Fontbonne University. Play begins at 11:00 am as Eureka squares of with Fontbonne, followed by a match versus Westminster.
