EC falls in league match to Maryville in 4 games
Sam Poterek's (Lee, Ill./Indian Creek) 200th block and the outstanding all-around play of Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) were not enough for Eureka College to overcome the Maryville University Saints Thursday night in a 3-1 (30-18, 20-30, 30-20, 30-18) home loss.
Bahorik tallied 19 assists, 10 digs, seven kills and six service aces for the Red Devils, who fell to 7-14 overall and 3-8 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Maryville is now 6-6, 5-6 SLIAC.
The Saints took it to the Red Devils in game one right from the opening serve, building a 10-2 lead. The margin eventually reached 15 before Eureka finished the game by outscoring Maryville 13-9.
That momentum carried over to game two as the Red Devils looked like an entirely different unit, scoring the first five points and never trailing. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) put away five kills and Bahorik was credited with three aces to lead the EC charge. The Saints marched back to tie the count once at 13 only to see Eureka take firm control of the game late. The Red Devils won 11 of the final 13 points for a 30-20 decision.
The final score was the same for game three, but it did not follow the teams when they switched sides. Maryville took its first lead at 8-7 and Eureka could not get it back. A 15-12 was broken open with seven straight Saints points and ended 30-20.
A slow start to game four doomed the Red Devils as they fell behind 10-4 and could not get closer than five the rest of the way.
Faith led Eureka with eight kills, while Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) posted a game-high 13 digs. Beth Applen (Chillicothe, Ill./IVC) and Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./HS) chipped in nine digs to the defensive effort.
Maggie Hoette led all players with 20 kills for a .421 percentage to pace Maryville. The Saints hit a modest .136, but allowed only a .007 percentage.
Eureka will be the site of a SLIAC tri-match Saturday, Oct. 6 with Greenville College, Webster University and Westminster College also involved. To begin play at 11:00 am, Eureka takes on league leading Webster and Greenville plays Westminster. The second wave of matches sees Eureka battling Westminster and Greenville against Webster.
