Eureka rallies to beat Westminster, gain split on day
Eureka College won for the first time when dropping the opening game of a match and second time this season over St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Westminster College Saturday afternoon in four games (24-30, 30-28, 30-25, 30-22. The day ended in a split as EC performed well offensively despite a 3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-24) loss to Webster University, which remained unbeaten on league play.
Eureka (8-15, 4-9 SLIAC) hit for a very respectable .219 against the top ranked defensive squad in the conference in Webster (13-6, 10-0 SLIAC). The Red Devils, however, fell victim to 10 service errors and nine serve receive errors. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) and Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) led Eureka in the kills department with 12 and 10 respectively.
Sam Poterek (Lee, Ill./Indian Creek) and Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) combined to put away nine more kills without an error. Bahorik led all players with 25 assists.
Webster scored seven straight points in taking early control of game one 7-1. The Red Devils stayed close for a while, getting within 13-8, but the Gorloks won 15 of the next 22 points en route to a 30-18 decision.
After hitting .258 in game one, Eureka was held to .111 in the second game, but stayed even closer on the scoreboard. Webster led 16-13 before running out to a 25-16 advantage on the strength of a 9-3 push.
The Red Devils trailed by just one, 21-20, in the third game before Webster took the next four points for an insurmountable lead.
Julie Haskell (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur), who recorded 11 kills, joined Faith (17) and Lindenmeyer (14) in double figures in kills as EC wore down Westminster (5-15, 2-9 SLIAC) for a 3-1 victory. The Red Devils dropped the first game 30-24, but continued their trend of steadily playing better throughout the day by taking the next three by increasingly wider margins.
Game two was tied an amazing 14 times, the last time coming at 28-28. Eureka came back from a 27-25 deficit to win 30-28. The Red Devils raced out to a 6-0 lead in game three only to fall behind
EC led 21-20 again in the fourth game, but quickly put Westminster away thanks to four consecutive service aces by Lindenmeyer, who led all players with six aces and 20 digs in the game. Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Bahorik each has 17 digs.
Eureka has just one contest this week, a Wednesday, Oct. 10 match up at Blackburn College starting
