Red-hot Devils upset Greenville 3-0
The Eureka College Red Devils continued their late season surge with an impressive 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-22) sweep of visiting Greenville College Tuesday night. Eureka's winning streak is now at four, the longest since September of last year. The loss is just the third for the Panthers in 13 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matches.
The Red Devils (11-15, 6-9 SLIAC) recorded five aces in the match. They all came in game one. Eureka never trailed just once in the opening frame, but there were five ties. The trend of the Red Devils winning the crucial points began in game one with Greenville (13-8, 10-3 SLIAC) ahead 17-16.
Eureka tied the game at 17 in time for Julie Haskell (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur) to serve for the next five points, igniting a 12-3 run that moved EC ahead 28-20. Greenville tried to come back, but a service error ended the game at 30-25.
Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) saved seven of her match-high 15 kills to lead Eureka to a win in an extremely closely played game two. There were 15 ties, with the largest lead being the Red Devils' 18-14 advantage. The Panthers strung together six consecutive points to erase that deficit and take the lead, but even that was sort-lived. The count knotted for the final time at 26 before a Greenville service error and two Myers kills set up game point. An attack error gave EC the game 30-27.
Eureka hit .217 and held Greenville to a .000 hitting percentage to earn the sweep 30-22. The Red Devils trailed 11-10, but won six of the next eight points and never looked back.
Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) led all players with a .455 hitting percentage. She had seven kills on 11 swings. Sam Poterek (Lee, Ill./Indian Creek) was a close second at .400. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) led all players with 20 digs and also chipped in nine kills. Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) recorded 10 digs, bringing her career total to 1,989. Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) dished out 39 assists, including in 15 game three alone.
Kristen Meminger led Greenville with seven kills. Laura Alo and Kerry Hammer had 12 digs apiece. Both sides struggled serving, combining for just nine aces against 21 errors on the night.
Eureka has a week between matches before traveling to Lincoln Christian College for a SLIAC match Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 pm. The Red Devils' next home match will be Senior Night on Oct. 25 at 7:00 pm.
