Forbes reaches 2,000 digs as EC wins 5th straight

October 23, 2007

LINCOLN, Ill. — Five and 2,000 were the lucky numbers for the Eureka volleyball team Tuesday night as the Red Devils won their fifth consecutive match in five games over the Angels of Lincoln Christian College (30-24, 30-28, 28-30, 26-30, 15-12). Meanwhile, EC senior Emily Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) became the first Red Devil, and one of a select few players in NCAA Division III competition, to reach 2,000 digs in a career.

Forbes led the team with 25 digs, giving her 2,014 in her four years at Eureka.

The Red Devils (12-15, 7-9 SLIAC), who were at one point 7-15, kept hope alive for a .500 season, while moving into sixth place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They avenged a 3-0 home loss to Lincoln Christian (11-16, 7-10 SLIAC) on September 27.

Eureka Coach Sandi Kelly cited the team's improved passing, serving and the play of Sam Poterek
(Lee, Ill./Indian Creek), among others, as the keys to victory.

Poterek hit at a .450 clip with a season-high 11 kills and three of Eureka's eight blocks for the match. She had plenty of help, of course. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS) led the team with 18 kills and chipped in 16 digs. Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) registered 42 assists, 13 digs and six kills with no errors, while Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) added seven kills and three blocks.

Eureka matched a season-high with 20 service aces led by five each from Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) and Bahorik.

Eureka has now posted five-match winning streaks three seasons in a row. The Red Devils have not won more than five consecutive matches since the 2000 season, however.

Eureka will honor its four volleyball seniors Thursday, Oct. 25 before the 7:00 pm SLIAC match against MacMurray College. In addition to Senior Night festivities, the Red Devils will be wearing throwback uniforms in conjunction with "Retro Night" at the Reagan Center.
