Seniors go out in style on Senior Night
October 25, 2007
EUREKA, Ill. Senior Night was aptly named Thursday as the four
senior Red Devils led Eureka College to a 3-0 (30-10, 30-21, 30-12) sweep
of MacMurray College. Not even the Red Devils' vintage throwback uniforms,
worn in conjunction with "Retro Night" could stop them.
To open the match, the Red Devils (13-15, 8-9 SLIAC) broke open a 4-4
tie with a commanding 14-1 run en route to their most lopsided win of
the season at 30-10.
Game two was more a struggle, but each of Eureka's seniors made sure the
momentum stayed on the home side. Chelsea Faith (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./HS)
hit 10 kills in the game to lead EC. Beth Applen (Chillicothe,
Ill./IVC) led all players with six digs, following closely by Emily
Forbes (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) with five. Sam Poterek (Lee, Ill./Indian Creek) served two of Eureka's seven aces.
Eureka jumped out to a 9-3 lead, watched MacMurray rally back to within
9-8, then won the next eight points to go up 17-8. MacMurray got no closer
than six the rest of the way.
The third stanza brought more good news for the Red Devils as an 11-3
run took Eureka out to a 18-7 advantage. Faith added six kills and Forbes
five digs in Eureka's 30-12 match-clinching win.
Faith was the only player in the contest to reach double figures in kills.
She easily reached the mark with 19. She also led EC with six aces. Forbes
led the match with 12 digs, while Applen was next with 10. Poterek added
four aces as Eureka matched a team season-high with 20.
First year players Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian)
and Marisa Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson) handled the setting
duties like veterans, posting 25 and 11 assists respectively.
Kayla Deany led MacMurray with six kills and 10 digs.
The Red Devils' current six-match winning streak is their longest since
winning nine consecutive matches during the 2000 season. Since, Eureka
had won five consecutive matches on four different occasions until finally
breaking through this year.
The EC volleyball squad will take the court at home once more this season
against Clarke College Saturday, Oct. 27 for a non-conference match. The
contest, which is slated for a Noon start, is part Homecoming festivities
at Eureka.
