Eureka begins season with 4 matches at illinois college invite

JACKSONVILLE — The Red Devils volleyball team began the season at the Illinois College Invitational with two matches on both Saturday and Sunday. Eureka was defeated by Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 (25-18, 29-27, 25-19), Dubuque 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 25-10), Bethany Lutheran 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-8, 25-12) and Illinois College 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-20).

 


Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) led the Red Devils offensively with 32 kills, 10 service aces and a .313 kill percentage. She also added 36 digs and had a hand in eight blocks. Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) also has an impressive start to the season, posting a .302 percentage with 17 kills and a team-leading 74 set assists and 50 digs.

 


Another returnee that was leaned on heavily was Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./HS), who had 49 digs from the back row. Newcomer Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./HS) began her EC career in style, leading the team with 10 blocks and ranking second with 22 kills.

 


Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) and Brittany Feger (Heyworth, Ill./HS) also hit down double digit kills at the event with 14 each.

 


The Red Devils will return to tournament play, this time at Illinois Wesleyan University as they play two matches on Friday, Sept. 5 and two more on Saturday, Sept. 6. Eureka's opponents on Friday will be Carthage (3:00 pm) and Dominican (7:30 pm). Saturday, EC will take on Wisconsin-Whitewater, who took second at the NCAA D-III national tournament hosted by Illinois Wesleyan last season, at 10:00 am and Benedictine at 2:30 pm.
