Boxscore

EUREKA — The Red Devils began the home portion of their 2008 volleyball schedule with a 3-0 loss to Illinois Wesleyan University (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) Tuesday night.

Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) recorded three of her team-leading five kills in the first set to keep Eureka (0-9) close in the early going. Illinois Wesleyan (3-6) held a slim 11-9 advantage before taking the next eight points on an 11-1 run that made the score 22-10.

The Red Devils improved their hitting in the second set, but so did the Titans, who took a 2-0 lead in the match. This time, it was the early part of the set that would do EC in as Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 7-2 edge and never looked back. Eureka hung tough, however, as Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./HS) was perfect with two kills on two attempts in addition to serving a pair of aces. The Red Devils trailed just 18-14 after scoring four out of five points only to see IWU rally for the final seven points of the set.

The Titans again enjoyed an early advantage in set three, but this time Eureka would come back from down 5-1 to tie the score five times. Finally, EC surged ahead 12-11. Illinois Wesleyan took the lead back, but Lindenmeyer served three consecutive aces to lift EC to its largest lead at 17-15. Once again, the Titans roared back with eight consecutive points to subdue the Red Devils, who would run out of points facing a 23-17 deficit.

Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) and Brittany Feger (Heyworth, Ill./HS) put down foul kills apiece for Eureka. Myers led the team with eight digs, one more than Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./HS) with seven.

Emily Hagen recorded a game-high seven kills and five blocks for IWU.

The Red Devils will not be back at home until Sept. 19 as they play their next five matches away. Four will come at the Rose-Hulman Invitational Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13. Friday's opponents will be Greenville (6:00 pm) and Rose-Hulman (8:00 pm). Saturday EC will play Wilmington (10:00 am) and Earlham (Noon).
