TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Eureka volleyball squad almost surprised conference rival Greenville in the first match played at the Rose-Hulman Invitational, but left the event being tagged with four defeats.
The Red Devils rallied from a two-set deficit by taking the next two by scores of 25-15 and 26-24. The final set, however, was taken by the Panthers 15-9. Three Red Devils picked up three double-doubles in the match with Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) having 12 kills and 21 digs, Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS) having 10 kills and 18 digs and Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) having 14 digs and 21 set assists.
Eureka next took on the tournament hosts from Rose-Hulman. The Engineers, who went on to post a perfect 4-0 mark in the event, topped EC 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-11). Myers led the Red Devils with 14 digs and six kills.
The bad luck for the Red Devils lingered over to Saturday as well. Wilmington College gained a 3-1 edge over EC (25-17, 25-23, 25-27, 25-16) in the morning contest, while Earlham College earned victory in a sweep (25-16, 25-11, 25-23).
Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./HS) registered a career high with a team leading 29 digs in the four-set match against Wilmington, which took second place at the tournament. Myers picked up her second double-double with 14 kills and 23 digs. Lindenmeyer and Marisa Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson) had four service aces each. Bahorik almost pulled off a rare triple double with 34 assists, 15 digs and nine kills.
Lindenmeyer led EC in the final match versus Earlham with nine kills. She finished the invitational with 36 kills, 52 digs and 11 service aces. Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./HS) , who led the team with a .205 kill percentage overall in the four matches, hit down five kills on only 14 tries against Earlham.
Eureka will play next at Lincoln Christian College Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 pm. The Red Devils, who have played just once at home thus far, are set to begin a six match homestand Sept. 19.
