campaign '08 reaches finish line for EC volleyball
Boxscore
The 2008 Eureka College volleyball campaign came to a conclusion Tuesday night. The Red Devils took an early lead in the first set and mounted a valiant comeback effort in third frame, but were forced to concede 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) to the visiting Greenville College Panthers.
The site changed to Eureka High School, but the Red Devils' (4-30, 4-12 SLIAC) luck did not. The young Red Devils, who do not have a senior on the roster, instead recognized the every family member and player on what ordinarily would have been Senior Night.
Kylie Bahorik (Washington, Ill./Peoria Christian) served aces on the first two points of the match as Eureka jumped out to a 4-0 lead. It would prove to be still too close to call, however, as the Red Devils advantage melted away during a 7-2 Greenville (16-12, 10-6 SLIAC) run that gave the Panthers a 13-11 lead. The Red Devils made every point count, staying within 18-16, but Greenville took the next three points and held on for a six-point decision.
Eureka elected to play in pursuit mode in the second set, allowing the Panthers as large as a five point lead early. It seemed to be working when EC took to a 7-3 rally to get within 14-13. The Red Devils gave themselves two chances to tie the score, but they never could fully catch up. Clinging to a slim 15-14 edge, Greenville won the key battleground points, taking five out of the next six and never looking back. Both camps posted their best hitting percentages in the second with as EC hit .263 and Greenville was at .385.
The third set looked like a landslide victory for the Panthers after putting forth a 7-0 run for a 10-3 lead and increasing the advantage to 17-5 soon after. But Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./HS), who played her first match as a Red Devil in her former high school gym, had other ideas. She had four kills in what turned out to be her final set of the season to put her over 300 for the year. Meanwhile, Eureka made a game of it, charging back with an 11-1 rally that to the EC deficit to two points at 18-16.
Eureka got within a single point twice, but just as before, could not find the equalizer. Greenville recorded a kill and service ace following a Eureka attack error for a 23-19 lead that the Red Devils could not overcome.
Myers finished with a match-high 16 digs, with nine of them coming in the opening set. Her eight kills gave her 302 on the season, her second season as a Red Devil with over 300. Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./HS) also displayed an effective overall game with 10 digs and tying Myers for the team-high with eight kills.
Bahorik recorded her 21st double-double for the season with 10 digs and 20 assists. She also added four kills and three aces. Many of her passes went in the direction of Brittany Feger (Heyworth, Ill./HS) and Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./HS), who had seven and six kills respectively. The Red Devils hit for a .157 percentage for the match.
Greenville, which will appear in the conference playoffs for the third consecutive year on Saturday as the No. 4 seed, was led by Jenna Marcotte and Katelin Feyerabend with 11 kills. Marcotte also had four aces, while Kerry Hammer had 14 digs. The Panthers hit at a .254 clip for the match.
Eureka head coach Sandi Kelley will announce the end of season awards for her team at the E-Tribe Fall Sports Banquet to be held in the Cerf Center December 7 at 1:00 pm.
