Red Devils Beat Fontbonne, Clinch SLIAC Tournament Berth
CLAYTON, Mo. – Needing a win to clinch a berth in its first SLIAC Tournament, the Eureka College volleyball team posted a 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15 win over Fontbonne, Friday night in Clayton, Mo. The victory ensures the Red Devils will finish no lower than fifth in the conference standings, clinching a spot in the league tournament.
Three Red Devils finished with at least 10 kills in the win, led by senior outside hitter Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) with 14. Juniors Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./Arcola H.S.) and Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) each chipped in with 10.
Senior libero Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) led the defensive effort with 34 digs, followed by Lindenmeyer with 26 and freshman Courtney Kincaid (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) with 20. Fannon had four solo blocks and freshman Lauren Kao (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S.) served up a team-best three aces.
The victory improves to the Red Devils to 7-6 in league play this season. Because new SLIAC member is ineligible for conference tournament participation this season, the Red Devils needed a fifth place finish or better to clinch a top-four seed in the SLIAC Tournament. The tournament berth is Eureka’s first since joining the SLIAC in 2006 and first overall since earning #3 seed in the 2005 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Tournament.
Eureka will continue SLIAC play with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Red Devils will play Webster at noon before taking on Spalding at 2 p.m. in Webster Groves, Mo.
