Red Devils Rally For Split on "Dig Pink" Night
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior outside hitter Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) put down five of her match-high 19 kills in the fifth and decisive set of Tuesday’s nonconference match against the Milwaukee School of Engineering, leading the Red Devils to a come-from-behind 25-11, 22-25, 15-25, 25-23, 15-12 win over the Raiders at the Reagan Center. Lincoln Christian topped Eureka in the opener, 25-14, 25-22, 25-20.
Myers led the charge for EC during the fifth-set comeback against MSOE, recording five kills in 14 attempts. Junior Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) also came up big for the Red Devils in the final set, recording three kills on her four attempts. Junior Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./Arcola H.S.) clinched the victory for EC with her eighth kill of the night.
Eureka cruised to a 25-11 win in the first set behind four kills from Myers, but the visitors closed out a 25-22 victory in the second set before romping to a 25-15 triumph in set three. Needing a win to extend the match to a fifth set, EC freshman Lauren Kao (Normal, Ill./Normal Community H.S.) served up three of her match-high four aces and had a team-best four kills in the fourth frame to lead the Red Devils to a 25-23 win.
Eight different players recorded kills for Eureka in the win. Senior setter Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) had 45 assists while senior libero Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) recorded 32 digs. Lindenmeyer finished close behind Snopek with 26 digs.
In the opener, the Red Devils recorded seven kills in the opening set but fell behind in the match to Lincoln Christian with a 25-14 loss. Eureka hit .219 as a team in the second set, led by four kills from Myers, but the Red Lions outlasted EC for a 25-22 win. Fannon had a kill on each of her three attack attempts in the final set, but the Red Devils couldn’t slow the Red Lions in a 25-20 loss to end the match.
Myers and Fannon had eight kills each to lead Eureka in the loss. Willman had 18 assists and Snopek finished the match with a team-high 10 digs.
The volleyball program raised more than $300 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation during the event. Fans bought special pink t-shirts to commemorate the event and participated in raffle drawings for pink-themed prizes. Eureka will return to conference play this Friday with a pair of matches against SLIAC foes. The Red Devils will travel to Elsah, Ill. to play Principia at 5 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. clash with Greenville.
