Senior Trio to be Honored Tuesday Night
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior volleyball players Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.), Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) and Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) will be honored during the program’s annual Senior Night ceremony prior to Tuesday’s match against Blackburn at 7 p.m. at the Reagan Center.
The trio, all starters, has helped the Red Devils to their first-ever SLIAC Tournament berth and first overall conference tournament appearance since the Red Devils were the #3 seed in the 2005 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Tournament.
With a Eureka win over the Beavers, coupled with a Fontbonne loss at regular season SLIAC champion Webster on Tuesday night, the Red Devils will clinch the #3 seed and a date with #2 seed Greenville in the league tournament semifinals, scheduled to take place this Saturday at Webster. Eureka is currently fifth in the league standings, but will tie Fontbonne for fourth place in the previous scenario. Because Eureka owns a potential tiebreaker over Fontbonne and new SLIAC member Spalding is ineligible for postseason play, its second-place finish will not factor into the conference tournament seeding and the Red Devils will receive the #3 seed.
One of two four-year players on the roster, Myers enters Tuesday night’s contest ranked third all-time at Eureka with 1,237 kills. She leads the Red Devils with 360 kills this season, a new single-season personal best. Her 360 kills also leads the SLIAC, while her 3.21 kills per set are third among conference players. She tied a career-high with 25 kills on Oct. 3 against Fontbonne, the second-highest total among SLIAC players in a single game this season.
Another four-year player at Eureka, Willman joins Spalding’s Allison Woosley as the only to players to rank among the top-five in the SLIAC in assists and service aces this season. Her 136 career aces ranks eighth all-time at Eureka. A first-year setter after making the switch from defensive specialist, Willman has 749 assists on the year. She set a career-high with 49 helpers on Oct. 3 against Fontbonne, the fourth-best single-game effort by a SLIAC player this season.
Snopek rounds out the group of seniors that will be recognized Tuesday night. Eureka’s primary defensive specialist, Snopek has 648 digs this season and entered last weekend as the SLIAC leader with 5.28 digs per set. In a win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sept. 19, Snopek recorded 41 digs, the highest total by a SLIAC player this season. A transfer from Illinois Central College last fall, Snopek also plays on the Eureka women’s basketball team and is playing on a college volleyball team for the first time.
