Spalding Sweeps Eureka Volleyball

EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College senior outside hitter Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) recorded a team-high eight kills, but new SLIAC member Spalding used an efficient attack to beat the Red Devils in three sets, 25-15, 25-23, 25-21, Friday night at the Reagan Center.

The Red Devils (6-12, 3-3 SLIAC) struggled in the early going, hitting -.065 as a team in the first set.  Myers and sophomore Brittany Feger (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth H.S.) put down two kills each in the frame, but Spalding cruised to the 25-15 win.  Eureka had only five kills in the set.

Eureka responded with its best effort of the night in the second set.  Junior Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) came away with a kill on each of her first three attacks to give the Red Devils an early lead, but back-to-back points from the visitors broke a 23-23 tie and closed out the set for the Golden Eagles (11-3, 3-0 SLIAC).  The Red Devils finished the set with a .211 attacking percentage, recording 12 kills against just four errors in 38 attempts.

The third set was again closely contested before Spalding pulled away for a 25-21 win to clinch the match.  Junior Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./Arcola H.S.) applied most of the pressure during the set for EC with 18 attacks, finishing the frame as one of three Red Devils with three kills.

Myers posted a team-high eight kills, followed closely by Feger and Lindenmeyer with seven each.  Fannon finished with six.  Senior Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) had 23 assists in the loss while senior Lauren Snopek (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) had 14 digs.  Snopek led a group of three Red Devils to have at least 12 digs.

The Red Devils will have less than 24 hours to rest before hosting a pair of SLIAC foes Saturday night at the Reagan Center.  Eureka will host Fontbonne at 4 p.m., followed by a 6:30 p.m. match against MacMurray.
