Webster Too Much For Eureka in SLIAC Sweep
EUREKA, Ill. – The Eureka College volleyball team raced to an early lead in the first set of Tuesday’s SLIAC match against Webster at the Reagan Center, but the two-time defending SLIAC champion Gorloks recovered for a 25-18, 25-10, 25-18 league win over the Red Devils.
Playing at home for the first time since Sept. 1, the Red Devils (2-9, 1-1 SLIAC) jumped in front 8-4 in the opening set, capped by two kills from junior Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) and a service ace from junior Marisa Durley (Roanoke, Ill./Roanoke-Benson H.S.). The visiting Gorloks responded with a run of their own, rattling off a 15-3 spurt to regain control of the set and a 19-11 lead. Six different Webster players put down a kill during the stretch, including three from Abby Williams. A kill from Jackie Novak ended the set with a 25-18 win for Webster.
Webster (4-4, 2-0 SLIAC) dominated the second set, claiming a 25-10 win. Jackie Schall led the charge for the Gorloks during the frame, putting down five kills with only one error on 13 attempts. Webster hit .200 as a team, while Eureka recorded six kills against eight errors for a -.051 attacking percentage.
The third set was tightly contested early on, as Brittany Feger’s (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth H.S.) kill on an assist from Kaurie Lindenmeyer (Arcola, Ill./Arcola H.S.) forced an 11-11 tie. Webster countered with three straight points and eventually stretched its lead to five at 19-14, but Eureka inched back within three at 21-18 after another kill from Feger. The Gorloks closed out the set and the match with a 4-0 run, highlighted by two service aces from Mary Jo Schweitzer.
Feger recorded nine kills to lead the Red Devils. Senior Laura Willman (Metamora, Ill./Metamora H.S.) had 16 assists, the third-highest single-game total of her EC career. Eureka’s Heather Myers (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) continued to inch closer to the 1,000 career kill mark, finishing the night with six. She now needs just 32 kills for 1,000.
Schall led all players with 14 kills and also had 11 digs for a double-double. Schweitzer had a game-high 20 digs for the Gorloks.
Despite Thursday’s contest being Eureka’s first game at the Reagan Center in more than two weeks, the Red Devils will return to the road this weekend for three matches on Saturday at a tournament hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Eureka will play Marian, MSOE and Edgewood during the tournament. SLIAC play continues Tuesday, Sept. 22 at MacMurray.
