Eureka Volleyball Sweeps RMU-Peoria on Senior Night
EUREKA, Ill. -- The Eureka College volleyball team played its final match of the 2011 season on Thursday night, coasting to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-20 non-conference victory over Robert Morris-Peoria on Senior Night at the Reagan Center. Eureka senior outside hitter Brittany Feger (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth H.S.) paced the Red Devils with nine kills to close her four-year career with 688 kills and move into 10th place on the all-time Eureka list.
Eureka (9-19) never trailed in the opening game, and a solo block and service ace on back-to-back plays from senior middle blocker Paige Fannon (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria H.S.) pushed the Red Devils to a 9-4 advantage. Eureka held that advantage until an attack error drew the Eagles even (22-22) late in the game, but a kill by EC junior Kelli Dunne (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S./Illinois Central) and consecutive attack errors by RMU gave the Red Devils a 25-22 win in game one.
The Red Devils cruised in game two, scoring nine consecutive points behind three kills each from Dunne and Fannon during Feger’s service to claim a 9-1 lead. An EC attack error pulled the visitors within seven (12-5), but Eureka answered by scoring four of the next five points and its lead never dipped below nine points again. The Red Devils secured the 25-13 win on a kill by sophomore Peyton McAtee (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.).
In game three, McAtee’s kill gave the Red Devils their first lead of the set (4-3) as part of a 6-0 run by the hosts. The Red Devils led by as many as eight points on four different occasions, but RMU took advantage of two Eureka attack errors during a 5-0 burst to climb back within four points (23-19). The charge was too little, too late for the Eagles, and Feger’s final kill ended the match after just 67 minutes for a 25-20 win in game three and the Red Devils’ fourth consecutive victory over RMU-Peoria in the all-time series.
Despite missing the final 15 matches of her sophomore season in 2009 after a major knee injury, Feger finished Thursday’s match with 688 career kills to pass Kelli Adams Stanley (2004-05) for 10th place on Eureka’s all-time list. She is the first Red Devil to enter Eureka’s all-time top-10 kill list since Heather Myers cracked the top-10 during her junior season in 2008. Feger also recorded a match-high five service aces on Thursday.
Fannon’s name will also appear in Eureka’s volleyball record book, as her two solo blocks on Thursday ran her career total to 102. That figure ranks 10th all-time in Eureka volleyball history. She added six kills, three digs and a service ace in her 128th and final collegiate match. Eureka’s third senior, Annette Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.), recorded 26 assists, two kills, a dig and a service ace in her final collegiate match.
Dunne shared match-high honors with Feger with nine kills. Junior libero Courtney Kincaid (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) added 19 digs in the victory.
The victory, Eureka’s third straight on Senior Night, ends the Red Devils’ season with a 9-19 overall record.
