RMU-Springfield Takes Down Eureka in Four Sets
EUREKA, Ill. -- Eureka College sophomore outside hitter Peyton McAtee (Morton, Ill./Morton H.S.) put down a career-high 18 kills to go along with 21 digs for her seventh career double-double, but visiting Robert Morris-Springfield recovered after dropping the opening game to post a 19-25, 25-21, 30-28, 25-23 non-conference victory over the Red Devils, Monday night at the Reagan Center.
The Red Devils (8-18) never trailed in game one and broke the only tie of the set when an RMU (15-13) attack error pushed Eureka to a 4-3 advantage. Eureka led by as many as seven (17-10) when a kill from junior outside hitter Kelli Dunne (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods H.S./Illinois Central) capped a 6-0 EC run and gave the Red Devils control of the game. The Eagles came within three (20-17) later in the set, but McAtee’s kill secured a 25-19 win for the Red Devils.
Eureka controlled the early stages of game two as well, building an 8-4 lead. The visitors battled back to force a tie on three different occasions before taking their first lead at 14-13 on a Eureka attack error. The Red Devils never led again but were able to force a 20-20 deadlock on another kill from McAtee before RMU scored five of the last six points of the game and clinched the 25-21 victory on a Eureka blocking error.
Game three proved to be Eureka’s longest game of the season, featuring 18 ties and five lead changes. A kill by junior outside hitter Shari Steidinger (Forrest, Ill./Prairie Central H.S.) gave Eureka its biggest advantage of the set at 14-9, but RMU answered with five straight points for a 14-14 tie and a Eureka timeout. Neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of the game, and RMU staved off game point service from the Red Devils four times before closing the match on a 4-1 run for a 30-28 win in the game and a 2-1 lead for the match.
Eureka held an 18-16 lead in game four before the Eagles scored seven straight for a 23-18 advantage. The Red Devils fought back, getting three kills from McAtee to pull within one (24-23) before RMU closed out the match with a kill to earn its 15th victory of 2011 and its seventh victory over a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member school this season.
Senior middle blocker Brittany Feger (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth H.S.) continued her march to the top-10 on the all-time Eureka kill list, recording 10 kills on Monday to move her career total to 672 in 111 career matches. Feger needs 15 kills in the final two matches of her collegiate career to reach Kelli Adams Stanley (2004-05) for a 10th-place tie on the all-time list. She also chipped in with three service aces on Monday night.
Dunne was Eureka’s most accurate hitter for the match, collecting five kills on seven attempts without an error for a .714 attack percentage. Senior setter Annette Crady (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora H.S.) nearly matched a career-best with 46 assists, while junior libero Courtney Kincaid (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) led all Red Devils with 33 digs.
Eureka will close the 16-match SLIAC portion of its schedule Tuesday night in a 7 p.m. match at Greenville.
