Ms. Amanda Frioli
An assistant professor of Communication, Ms. Frioli holds two degrees from Illinois State University and her M.A. from Eastern Illinois University. A faculty member at Eureka College since 2008, she teaches a wide range of Communication courses and enjoys serving as
co-adviser to the Communication Club. Previous to Eureka College, she functioned as both faculty and Coordinator to the Speech Lab at Illinois State University. Prior to ISU, Ms. Frioli directed the speech team at Eastern Illinois University. email
Dr. Michael Thurwanger
Associate Professor of Communication and Director of the Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program. Dr. Thurwanger joined the faculty in 2008. He earned a B.S. in Far Eastern Studies (Chinese) at the U.S. Naval Academy, an M.A. in Public Relations from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Journalism from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His teaching experience includes nine years at Bradley University (Peoria, Ill.) and two years at the Defense Information School (Indianapolis). He is a retired naval officer with more than 20 years of commissioned service including 16 years as a Public Affairs Officer, performing in a wide range of public relations and strategic communications responsibilities for the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense. email

Dr. Jessica Barr
An Assistant Professor of English specializing in British literature, Dr. Barr's research focuses on the Middle Ages. She has recently published a book, Willing to Know God: Dreamers and Visionaries in the Later Middle Ages (Ohio State University Press, 2010), and is also the author of several articles and book reviews. In addition to British and medieval literature, her teaching interests include feminist criticism, European novels, and the legends of King Arthur. She serves as the Director of the Honors Program and the faculty sponsor of the Eureka College chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. Dr. Barr received her B.A. in English from Oberlin College and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Brown University. email | website

Dr. Maria O'Malley
Assistant Professor of American Literature. O'Malley formerly taught at Briar Cliff University, Sioux City. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, a master's degree from New York University, New York, and a doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder. email
Dr. Kathy Whitson
Professor of English, specializes in Modern and Contemporary literature and has further interest in Native American literature. She has published several articles and book reviews and is the author of The Encyclopedia of Native American Literatures (ABC-Clio Press) and The Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature (Greenwood Press). Other scholarly interests include ecocriticism, poetry, and linguistics. Her current writing (creative non-fiction and historical fiction) centers on Appalachian history and culture. Ms. Julia Colorado

Mme Elizabeth Field
Assistant Professor of Foreign Language, "Madame" created the French Minor course of study. Her interests are beyond France: she teaches Francophone Literature (Canadian, African, Caribbean) and has traveled widely including Europe, Africa, Mexico, Ecuador and the Gapalagos Islands. To encourage interest in Global Awareness, she hosts Franco Lunches of various cuisines open to the EC Family and during her tenure as Chair of the International Studies Committee, she sought to bring the world to campus: An African Afternoon, Pacific Rim Day, British Isles Day and Hispanic Day. She has led Travel Seminars to Ghana, Senegal, Greece and Hawaii; her French students often study in France. She also leads a Senior Seminar, "Can't We All Just Get Along?", in which issues of racism, intolerance and prejudice in our world are discussed via films and readings. PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION
Dr. Scott Hemmenway
Professor of Philosophy, has written numerous articles and conference papers on Plato's philosophy, has presented his work in England and has been awarded two summer research grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He recently spent a sabbatical leave as a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Philosophy at Boston University. He is currently working on a monograph about the myth of Atlantis. Besides offering courses in philosophy, Dr. Hemmenway teaches Ancient Greek, chairs the Humanities division, and coordinates the Honors Program. Dr. William A. Wright
Assistant Professor of Religious Studies. Dr. Wright teaches courses in world religions, Bible, and theology. He received a M.A.R. from Yale Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Chicago. His current book project, Salvation in Writing: A Theography of Calvin's Soteriology, draws on philosophy and the theology of John Calvin to explore how Christian doctrine can responsibly participate in academic conversations. He is also currently working on an article on the Trinity and another on Calvin's use of experience. Dr. Wright founded and organizes the Garrison Theology Colloquium, a public discussion forum on current religion and theology. He is an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). email
