The Eureka College Student Alliance for a Greener Environment (SAGE) will hold Food Day Oct. 24 to raise awareness and support for sustainable agriculture. The event will offer baked goods and pizza made from locally grown ingredients from sustainable farms.
“SAGE encourages the Eureka College campus and the broader community to come try these foods made with ingredients from area farms that practice sustainable agriculture,” said SAGE president Amanda Christenson, a senior environmental studies major from Eureka.
A bake sale will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Cerf Center at Eureka College. A pizza special will be offered from 4 to 10 p.m. at Joe’s Pizza, 144 N. Main St., Eureka.
The bake sale will offer homemade items that include at least one organic, locally grown ingredient from the Brockman Family Farms and other farms. The baked goods will have labels that identify the ingredients and their sources. Proceeds will be used to purchase starter plants for SAGE’s herb garden at Dickinson Commons on campus.
SAGE and Joe’s are collaborating to create an “ode to sustainable ag” pizza, which can be eaten at the restaurant or ordered for take-out by calling (309) 467-2386.
The book “The Seasons on Henry’s Farm” by Terra Brockman and SAGE shirts will be for sale at both events, which are being held in conjunction with national Food Day, a celebration and movement for healthful, affordable and sustainable food.
