Eureka College Greeks to hold food drive to benefit Eureka Area Food Pantry

november 6

The Eureka College Greek Council and Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity will collect canned food in a door-to-door drive in Eureka Nov. 6. The food will be donated to the Eureka Area Food Pantry.

Students delivered empty grocery bags donated by Eureka IGA and letters explaining the project to approximately 350 homes on Oct. 24, said fraternity spokesman Michael McComas of Bloomington. Students will return from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 6 to pick up filled bags. Empty bags also are available for residents to pick up in the Cerf Center office on campus. Items that especially are needed are canned vegetables, canned fruits, soups, baking mixes, canned juices and cereals, McComas said.

The drive is part of the North American Food Drive project sponsored by more than 220 Lambda Chi Alpha chapters throughout the United States and Canada every fall since 1993. Last year’s event netted more than 2.9 million pounds of food. Local organizers netted 540 pounds last year and hope to receive 750 pounds this year, McComas said.
