Eureka College Executive in Residence James Owens to Speak on Global Competitiveness

Eureka College’s first Executive in Residence, James Owens, will discuss global competitiveness at a free public presentation at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Cerf Center at Eureka College. Owens will be interviewed by Eureka College Provost Philip Acree Cavalier, followed by questions from the audience. Topics will include the global economy, the United States’ fiscal and trade deficits and ways to restore economic vitality and the economic future of American citizens.

“As a corporate leader and economic scholar, and at a time when confidence in the economy, the government and the future is lagging, Dr. Owens will offer insights into reclaiming America’s world prominence, economic prosperity and optimism,” said Eureka College President J. David Arnold.

In his role as an Executive in Residence, Owens will share his experiences and perspective on a broad range of topics during class visits, public presentations and one-on-one meetings with students enrolled in business administration, accounting, economics and organizational leadership classes, Arnold said.

Owens was named as the first Eureka College Executive in Residence last spring. The program provides students with first-hand insights into executive corporate leadership and the development of business strategies that go beyond texts and other written materials assigned in business courses, Arnold said.   

Owens holds a doctorate in economics from North Carolina State University. He joined Caterpillar as a corporate economist in 1972. He was chairman and CEO from 2004 until his retirement in 2010.
