Reagan Fellow to Study at University of Oxford
Casey Schumacher of buckley, IL
Eureka College junior Casey Schumacher will study at the University of Oxford in Oxford, England, next fall, in part through a fellowship she received at Eureka College. The history major will spend three months at the university beginning in mid-September. Founded in approximately 1090, Oxford is the oldest English-speaking university in the world.
Part of Schumacher’s trip will be a mentorship that is included in her full-tuition Ronald W. Reagan Fellowship, which includes two mentorships within the United States or abroad. The Reagan program provides funding to Fellows to be applied to travel and living expenses for the mentorships. A second portion of her trip is through the college’s study abroad program, which pays a portion of expenses.
Schumacher’s mentorship will take place at Oxford’s St. John’s College, where she will perform theology and philosophy research with Judith Wolfe, a teaching fellow in theology. The research will focus on both Heideggerian philosophy and the novels of C.S. Lewis.
The study abroad portion of the trip will be at Oxford’s New College as part of the competitive Oxford Study Abroad Programme. It will include two tutorials on 18th century European history and the history and theology of the Reformation. The tutorials will include nine separate classes. Schumacher will have full undergraduate privileges, including living on campus, participating in clubs and societies and access to all Oxford libraries.
Schumacher is a daughter of Dan and Barb Schumacher of Buckley. She is a 2009 graduate of Paxton-Buckley-Loda High School.
