Photography exhibit opens Jan. 18 at Eureka College
Artists’ reception at 5 pm
An exhibition of photography by Sean Carsten and Michael Stropkovic Jr. will open with a free artists’ reception at 5 p.m. Jan. 18 in Burgess Hall Art Gallery at Eureka College.
The exhibit, which will run through Feb. 21, is titled “Das Foto” and will feature what Carsten calls “an experiment of simple photography showing that anyone can create great photos of everyday life.” The photos were taken with Kodak EasyShare digital cameras and show that “with the right skills and a little artistic knowledge, anyone can become an artist without an enormous budget or expensive equipment,” Carsten said.
Carsten has been experimenting with photography for more than three years and has developed a distinct style of abstract photography. He also photographs historical subjects and urban street life. He founded and manages QP Photography, which is a group of photographers in the Joliet area.
Stropkovic was inspired by Carsten’s early work and began taking photographs last year. He devised the "photo safari,” an extended photo shoot of a large area to gain photographic experience quickly. His concentration is on night photography, and he also experiments in photojournalism, sporting events and wildlife photography. He is the assistant webmaster for QP Photography and manages the QP Photography Studio.
“We have adopted the philosophy of always keeping our cameras with us,” Carsten said. “Great shots can happen anytime, anywhere, thus we create an interesting array of everyday photographs of our lives,”
The Eureka College art gallery is located on the third floor of Burgess Memorial Hall, 300 E. College Ave. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and by appointment by calling (309) 467-6866.
