Inaugural Cynthia Atterbury Piano Duet Recital set

Event to feature grand piano given in Atterbury’s memory

Eureka College will debut a grand piano that recently was donated to the school at the inaugural Cynthia Atterbury Piano Duet Recital at 4 p.m. Nov. 8 in McCallister Hall in the Chapel. The recital is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. The college’s music department plans to make the recital an annual event.

The 7-foot grand piano was a gift from Eureka College Trustee R. Rennie Atterbury III of Dunlap in memory of his wife, Cynthia Goldsmith Atterbury. Cynthia Atterbury, who owned the piano, died Oct. 28, 2008, in Flat Rock, N.C. The piano was built in Boston in 1911 by Vose and Sons and is encased in the original fruitwood cabinetry.

The recital will feature Eureka College students, alumni and faculty performing works for two pianists on the Vose piano and the college’s Steinway concert grand piano. The program will include works by Mozart, Brahms, Von Weber, Bizet, Faure and Poulenc; a jazz theme and variations; and an arrangement of sacred music for four pianists.
